Hugo

Victor Hugo was not a lawyer; Nevertheless, he pleaded four times before commercialand civil courts to defend his own cause, or that of his son. Above all, he passionately advocated for causes dear to him—with eloquence and a masterful pen—such as his pleas against slavery and the death penalty.

A brilliant orator, Victor Hugo faced hostile parliamentary assemblies as a deputy and later as a senator, drawing from the political passions of his timeto inspire his writings and speeches. Asan emblematic figure of an outlaw, exiled to Jersey and Guernsey islands, he wieldedhis words to triumph over oppression; he embodied the causes he defended to give them life and substance.

Victor Hugo certainly wasn’ta lawyer; Yet,he exemplified the highest qualities expected of a litigator: independence, freedom and relentless advocacy withoutfearingsolitude in battles against the multitudes. While he was not a lawyer, he possessed the spirit and qualities of one.

Therefore, it was only natural that we decided to humbly place ourselves under his patronage by adopting his name when our firm was locatedon his Avenuein Paris. Although we have since moved, we retain an almost filial attachment to this great man. Beyond his literary and political legacy, Victor Hugo remains, for us as lawyers, a guiding light.
